How to play Contract Rummy

A rummy game for 3 to 8 players, played over seven rounds. Each round has a contract, a set of melds you must lay down before you can go out. Also known as Liverpool Rummy and Progressive Rummy.

Setup

  • Use two decks with jokers for 3 or 4 players, three decks for 5 or 6, and four decks for 7 or 8.
  • Deal 10 cards each in rounds 1 to 3 and 12 cards each in rounds 4 to 7. Deal & Tally shows the number each round.
  • A set is three or more cards of the same rank. A run is four or more cards in a row in the same suit. Jokers are wild.

Your turn

  • Draw the top card of the stock or the top discard, then discard one card.
  • Once you've laid down your contract, you can add cards to any melds on the table on later turns.
  • Buying: when a player passes on the top discard, another player can ask to take it ("May I?"). They take the discard plus a penalty card from the stock. Many tables limit this to three buys per round.

Going out

The round ends when someone plays or discards their last card. In round 7, you have to lay down all your cards at once, with no discard.
