How to play Cribbage

A classic two-player card game (three can play too) where you score by making fifteens, pairs and runs, and race around the board to 121.

Setup

  • With 2 players, deal 6 cards each. With 3, deal 5 each and one card to the crib.
  • Each player puts cards face down into the crib until it has 4 cards. The crib belongs to the dealer.
  • The player left of the dealer cuts the deck and the dealer turns over the top card: the starter. If it's a jack, the dealer pegs 2 ("his heels").

The play (pegging)

  • Starting left of the dealer, players take turns laying one card face up and saying the running total. The total can't go over 31.
  • Score as you go: making 15 is 2, making exactly 31 is 2, a pair is 2, three of a kind is 6, four of a kind is 12, and a run of 3 or more is 1 per card.
  • If you can't play without going over 31, say "go." The last player to lay a card scores 1 (or 2 for exactly 31), and the count starts over.

The show (counting hands)

Each player counts their hand together with the starter card, starting left of the dealer. The dealer counts their hand, then the crib.

In the crib, a flush only counts if all five cards are the same suit. Face cards count 10 and aces count 1 when making 15. The best possible hand is 29.

Winning

The first player to reach 121 wins, even in the middle of a hand. Finishing before your opponent passes 90 is a skunk, which many players count as a double win.

Entering scores

After each hand, enter each player's pegging points and hand count, plus the dealer's crib. Tap Count cards to pick the four cards and the starter, and Deal & Tally counts the hand for you.
