How to play Nertz

A fast, loud card game where everyone plays at the same time. Each player needs their own deck with a different back so the cards can be sorted after each hand. Also called Pounce.

Setup

  • Each player shuffles their own deck and counts 13 cards face down into a pile, with the top card turned face up. This is your Nertz pile.
  • Deal four cards face up in a row next to it. These are your work piles.
  • Hold the rest of your deck as your stock.

Play

  • There are no turns. Everyone plays at once when someone says go.
  • The middle: any player can start a pile in the shared middle area with an ace, then build it up in the same suit, 2 through king. Anyone can play on any middle pile.
  • Work piles: build down in alternating colors, like solitaire. You can move cards between your work piles and fill an empty one with the top of your Nertz pile.
  • Stock: flip through your stock three cards at a time and play the top card when you can.

Ending a hand

When your Nertz pile is empty, call "Nertz!" and everyone stops at once.
