How to play Shut the Box

A classic pub dice game with a box of numbered tiles, usually 1 to 9, and two dice.

Your turn

  • Start with every tile up. Roll both dice and add them together.
  • Flip down any tiles that add up to your roll. A roll of 8 could be the 8, or 5 and 3, or 6 and 2, or 1, 3 and 4.
  • Keep rolling and flipping. Once the 7, 8 and 9 are all down, many players roll just one die.
  • Your turn ends when you can't flip tiles that match your roll.

Scoring

Add up the tiles still standing. That's your score, and low is good. Flip every tile and you've shut the box for a perfect 0. Some groups count that as an instant win.

Winning

After the agreed number of rounds, the lowest total wins.
