How to play Mafia

A party game of secret roles and bluffing for 5 or more players, plus one narrator. A few players are secretly the Mafia, and everyone else has to figure out who they are before it's too late. Also played as Werewolf.

Roles

Mafia (Werewolves)pick someone to eliminate each night
Doctor (Healer)saves one person each night
Detective (Seer)checks one person each night
Citizens (Villagers)find and vote out the Mafia

A common mix is one Mafia member for every 4 players. Deal & Tally suggests a number, and you can change it.

Dealing

The narrator doesn't play. Pass the phone around: each player taps to see their role, then hides it before passing it on. Mafia members also see who the rest of the Mafia are.

Night

  1. The narrator tells everyone to close their eyes.
  2. The Mafia open their eyes and silently agree on one person to eliminate.
  3. The Doctor wakes and points to one person to save.
  4. The Detective wakes and points to one person. The narrator nods if that person is Mafia, and shakes their head if not.

Day

  1. Everyone opens their eyes. The narrator announces who was eliminated, unless the Doctor saved them.
  2. Eliminated players are out of the game and stay quiet.
  3. Everyone talks it over and votes. The player with the most votes is out. A tie means nobody goes out.

Winning

The town wins when every Mafia member is out. The Mafia win when they equal or outnumber everyone else.

Tips for the narrator

  • Tap or knock on the table during the night so nobody can hear who's moving.
  • Tell a short story about each elimination. It's half the fun.
  • Some groups reveal a player's role when they're out. Others keep it secret until the end.
