How to play Rook

Rook is a partnership trick-taking game played with a Rook deck: four colors numbered 1 to 14, plus the Rook bird card. It's a family favorite, especially in the Midwest and the Mountain West. This page is a free score tracker and a quick guide to scoring.

Setup

  • Partners sit across from each other. The common tournament version removes the 1s through 4s, deals 9 cards each, and puts 5 cards in the middle as the nest.

Bidding

  • Players bid on how many points their team will take, usually starting at 70 and going up by 5.
  • The high bidder takes the nest, discards 5 cards, and names trump.
  • The Rook card is the highest trump in most games. Some groups play it lowest.

Counting cards

Each 55
Each 10 and 1410
The Rook20
Each 1 (if your group plays with them)15

That's 120 points in a hand without the 1s. The team that takes the last trick also gets any counters in the nest. Some groups add 20 points for taking the most tricks.

Scoring a hand

  • If the bidding team takes at least its bid, it scores the points it took.
  • If not, it's set: it loses the amount it bid.
  • The other team always scores the points it took.

Winning

The first team to 300 wins. Many groups play to 500.

Using the score tracker

Pick the team that won the bid, enter the bid and the points that team took. Deal & Tally gives the rest of the points to the other team.
